New York lawyer Hugo Spencer is home for the holidays in his native Milawaukee small-town, where his bossy widowed mother Kate commandeers him, best friend Madelyn 'Maddy' McKay and his Air Force brother Aiden to make o blast of her last year as chair of the Founder's day festivities. Most eager local volunteer is hunky carpenter Patrick Ryan, then closet gay Hugo's secret high-school crush, the bravely outed popular jock, who dropped out of college to join his ill fathers' Christmas trees-growing farm. It's soon obvious they make a great match, with some nudging from family, but Hugo is offered a promotion if he moves to London.
